HOW TO SAVE JOBS IN THE B.C. WOODS

Wilderness Committee Educational Report Vol.12 - No.8 - Winter'93-94

Write to the Premier. Ask for real change in forest management.

North entrance to Quatsino Sound on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island. Continuous clearcut logging showing 1992-93 "NDP" clearcut in upper right and "Socred" clearcuts made several years earlier in foreground. What's the difference?

It's time to end destructive clearcut logging and corporate control of BC's forest lands.

It's time to initiate local community control and environmentally-sound selection logging.

Ask:

  • Why is your government supporting forest policies which place the vested interests of a few large corporations ahead of the welfare of thousands of forest workers?
  • Why is your government protecting the status-quo-monopolistic control over timber supply instead of initiating the tenure reforms called for in the 1976 Pearse report and the 1991 Forest Resources Commission report?

    Ask the Premier to consider:

  • initiating tenure reforms to bring the control, management and use of the forests back to the small, community based companies and local people whose children will depend on them for survival in the future.
  • providing opportunities, such as a vastly expanded Woodlot Licence program, for local people to manage forests.
