Boreal Forests

Boreal Forest

The boreal forest is Canada's largest and least understood ecosystem. Most Canadians are surprised to learn that even our "prairie" provinces have boreal forests carpeting well more than half the land base! For more than a decade the Wilderness Committee has been studying the boreal forest and working to educate Canadians about the importance of this increasingly threatened ecosystem. Our current projects focus on protecting the East Shore Wilderness Area, stopping logging in provincial parks, and mitigating the effects of oil and gas development on Northern forests.
