In the southwestern coast of Vancouver Island, only a three hour drive from Victoria, lies one of the most magnificent remaining old-growth temperate rainforests left in British Columbia. With enormous red cedars and towering ancient sitka spruce, the Upper Walbran Valley is one of Vancouver Island's most spectacular remaining representatives of coastal temperate rainforest, a forest type that covers less than one fifth of one percent of the earth's entire landmass! Experts believe that areas like the Walbran and the adjacent Carmanah Valley have one of the highest amounts of biomass (organic matter) per hectare anywhere on the planet.
