Wilderness Committee Educational Report Vol.15 - No.03 Winter 1996

WE CAN PRESERVE THE WHOLE STOLTMANN WILDERNESS AND HAVE INCREASED TIMBER JOBS!

THE B.C. GOVERNMENT MUST...

  • Begin the tenure reform of B.C.'s forest lands by canceling International Forest Product's (InterFor) Tree Farm License (TFL) 38 when the contract comes up for renewal in June of 1996.
Grant park protection to the one-third of this TFL that overlaps the Stoltmann Wilderness and return control of the remainder of TFL 38 forest lands to the surrounding local communities.
  • Insure that all timber cut is milled in local communities such as Squamish and Pemberton.
  • Stop the export of raw logs and cants (squared off logs) to foreign mills. Only manufactured wood products should be shipped out of the province.
  • Replace clearcutting with single tree selection logging systems. This will protect fish and wildlife habitat as well as provide more jobs in the logging industry because eco-logging is more labour intensive.
