In 2001 the Squamish Nation completed a landuse plan for their territory, designating several areas, including the Upper Elaho and Sims Valleys that are declared Wild Spirit Places or Kwa kwayex welh-aynexws. Interfor has subsequently ceased logging in the Wild Spirit Places out of respect. This paper describes Wild Spirit Places and what you can do to make sure they live on for our children's children and beyond.

Squamish Nation Ambassadors

The Squamish Nation Youth Ambassadors are part of the Aboriginal Ambassador Society. This society provides Aboriginal youth with the means and opportunity to share their culture with visitors in a way which bridges the Native and non-Native worlds, delights the public and fosters the Aboriginal leaders of tomorrow. The Ambassadors provide cultural interpretation and visitor services at venues such as Shannon Falls Provincial Park, the Squamish Adventure Centre and the Grouse Mountain Hiwus Feasthouse. The Ambassadors also host the Uts'am-Witness Project, a non-profit initiative which holds public camping weekends in the Sims Valley and other wilderness regions of Squamish Nation traditional territory. Through the Uts'am-Witness Camping Weekends (www.utsam-witness.ca) and their work at other venues, the Ambassadors are helping to share the magic of the Wild Spirit Places and bring people together to celebrate this extraordinary gift.
