Join the Western Canada Wilderness Committee
Western Canada Wilderness Committee (WCWC) is a non-profit charitable society headquartered in Vancouver, BC. Founded in 1980 by a few concerned citizens, we are now 20,000 members strong.
Our job is preserving wilderness, the natural life-support system of planet Earth. From the very earliest days of the Wilderness Committee the protection of Vancouver island wilderness has been at the forefront of our campaigns.
Our first Endangered Wilderness Calendar, published for 1981, starred Meares Island. Subsequent calendars and educational newspapers , like the one you are reading now, have featured Carmanah Valley, Walbran Valley, Brooks Peninsula, Tahsish-Kwois Valley, Clayoquot SOund and the Tsitika Valley.
During the past decade we have produced educational reports, videos and posters. We have held rallies, art shows and community meetings. We have built trails and research stations. We have bushwacked through, zodiaked into and flown over much of wild Vancouver island-all in defense of the precious last wilderness strongholds.
We have listened to loggers, mill owners and community representatives. We have listened to First Nations leaders. We have come out strongly in favour of taking Vancouver Island's forests back from the big timber companies and returning control to local Native and non-native communities.
We are not against all logging. We are against clearcutting. We are for selection logging methods. We are against excessive corporate profits. We are for sustainable community and forestry jobs. Having both more permanent forestry jobs and more protected ancient forests is the only way to go. I hope that after reading this newspaper, you will sign the petition on the back page and return it to us. I also encourage you to become a member of WCWC (if you are not already one). It costs only $30 a year. We believe it is one of the best investments you can make to save the environment and jobs.
Sincerely yours,
Paul George, Founder.
