Hon. Pat Bell, Minister of Agriculture and Lands

Dear Hon. Pat Bell, Minister of Agriculture and Lands:

I wish to register my opinion regarding the imminent extinction of the Canadian population of the Northern Spotted owl. It is well documented that the decline of spotted owls, which are only found in southwest British Columbia, is due to industrial logging in their old growth habitat. Spotted owls need old growth forests in which to roost, nest and forage - the same forests that are targeted by logging companies. If action is not taken immediately, scientists believe that the spotted owl will become extinct in Canada within the next decade.

Opinion

In My Opinion Please protect the Northern spotted owl by instituting an immediate moratorium on logging in spotted owl habitat, including all old growth habitat and suitable second growth habitat. It is important to take action immediately if this critically endangered bird – which is an important indicator species for other old-growth dependent forest species – is to survive in Canada.
Please DO NOT protect the Northern spotted owl and its old growth habitat. I do not think that these remaining forested habitats should be off-limits to logging interests. We need logging jobs now - future generations can fend for themselves.
