The petition of the undersigned, concerned citizens states that:
WHEREAS the process of hydraulic fracturing for shale gas within the Province of British Columbia remains the predominant drilling technique adopted by the gas industry,
WHEREAS regulation and accounting of water usage in the process of hydraulic fracturing remains inadequate and in some cases non-existent,
WHEREAS the Province has issued permits for 60 million gallons of freshwater on a daily basis to the gas industry, from 540 of the Province’s rivers, lakes and creeks,
WHEREAS water used by the gas industry in the process of hydraulic fracturing is rendered toxic by the use of carcinogenic chemicals,
WHEREAS methane leaks from hydraulic fracturing continue to increase the Province’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions,
WHEREAS bans and partial bans of the use of hydraulic fracturing have been introduced in France, Bulgaria, South Africa, Northern Ireland, Ireland, New York State, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Quebec and Newfoundland, amongst others,
I urge you to show true political leadership and commit the province to a comprehensive ban on all fracking operations.
