The campaign to protect the Juan de Fuca Trail is heating up!

Wednesday, March 30, 2011

The outpouring of public pressure on the Capital Regional District (CRD) is starting to make in roads! Help us put on another push and let them know this project is bonkers.

Over the last month, opposition to the proposed development alongside the Juan de Fuca Trail has been growing. Throughout the process we have firmly stated that this is a regional issue, and there should be dealt with by the whole CRD board -- not just leaving a small sub-committee of the board to make a decision.

Your phone calls, letters and voices are starting to have a big impact. Last Wednesday members of the CRD Transportation and Protective Services Committee asked for a staff report on how to change the voting structure for rezoning applications in the rural and resource lands.

If this goes ahead, the entire CRD board will get to have their say on this destructive development. Which is very important because the elected officials that are accountable to voters should be the ones to make this decision.

Electoral area representative Mike Hicks is furious that this issue is being opened up to the whole regional decision-making body. He is trying to play turf politics and pit Victorians against people from East Sooke to Port Renfrew.

But people from East Sooke, Otter Point and the Pacheedaht Nation have spoken out against the project.

The Juan de Fuca Trail is a national treasure, and needs to be protected.

Please help us make a stand. Send your email today and let all of the CRD board members know you want the issue to be voted on by the whole CRD board and that you want the rezoning application to be denied. The next CRD meeting is coming up on April 13th, so please help us spread the word and generate lots of letters.
