Trouble in Paradise: BC’s Parks at Risk

Wednesday, September 01, 2010

Last week the Auditor General of BC issued a damming report of the Provincial Government's management of our province's parks and protected areas.

The report found the the government was “not meeting its goal” to conserve the ecological integrity of our park system.

The critical audit found that ecological plans for parks and protected areas were outdated or non-existent, conservation policies were lacking and that many protected areas were too small and fragmented to support biodiversity.

Chronic under-funding, poor management and gaps in our protected area system are a real and present danger to our world famous park system but with your help we can change that.

British Columbia is renowned for it vast wilderness and magnificent wildlife and an amazing park system that covers almost 14 per cent of the province. Our protected areas provide us with a wealth of benefits including recreational opportunities, beauty and invaluable ecosystem services but unfortunately BC’s protected area system is being put at risk by the government's neglect and mismanagement.

Please take 5 minutes to send a letter to Premier Gordon Campbell asking him to stand up for BC’s provincial parks and to follow the Auditor General’s recommendations to help safeguard our protected area system.

Thank you for your help,

Gwen Barlee | Policy Director
