Meet the Peace in Victoria, Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast and Whistler

Thursday, May 19, 2011

I have just returned from visiting our province's interior on the first leg of our Meet the Peace BC-wide speaking tour.

I had the privilege of presenting about the Peace River and the Site C Dam to four amazing communities. Accompanied by Tribal Chief Liz Logan of the Treaty 8 First Nations , Diane Culling from the Peace River Valley Environmental Association and Tria Donaldson of the Wilderness Committee, we spoke about the importance of protecting areas as beautiful and ecologically important as the Peace River Valley.

I am now writing you to invite you to come out to the second leg of our tour, starting on May 30 in Victoria, and continuing through Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast and Whistler (see venues and dates below). The beautiful Peace River Valley is under threat of being flooded and forever drowned by the proposed Site C Dam and we must stand up to protect this valuable land.

Nestled in the northeast corner of British Columbia, the Peace River flows from the Rocky Mountains towards the Arctic Ocean. The valley is home to a number of First Nations' traditional territories, several thousand hectares of fertile agricultural lands and farms, old-growth boreal forests. The valley is one of the most important wildlife corridors in the Yellowstone to Yukon migration corridor chain.

This is an important time to raise awareness about Site C, because this week BC Hydro moved forward with the environmental review for the project. They also announced that the mega-dam project now has a new, higher estimated cost -- it's up from $6 billion to a whopping $7.9 billion!

Come hear first hand from some of the people who will be most directly impacted by the project, and find out how we can work together to stop this foolish, expensive valley-drowning project. Together, we can keep the Peace.

I look forward to seeing you at one of the events listed below.
