British Columbia has nine active coal mines, and one mine currently on hiatus. Combined these mines produce over 25 million tonnes of coal each year. Much of this coal is for export, and is not counted in BC's emissions reporting.  

Vancouver Island

Quinsam This mine is located on Vancouver Island and owned by Hillsborough Resources. Every year, the mine produces over 877,000 tonnes of coal

The Interior
Basin Coal Mine
The Basin coal mine is located 30km northwest of Princeton. It is an open pit coal mine that produces thermal coal. Owned by Compliance Energy. Production for 2007 was 130,000 tonnes. Thought it is currently closed, there are plans to re-open this mine in 2010

The Kootenays
Coal Mountain
Coal Mountain coal mine is located 30 km southeast of Sparwood, BC. This open pit mines produces both thermal and metallurgical coal. Owner by Teck Coal, it currently produces 2.2 million tonnes of coal each year

Elkview
Elkview is located in the Elk Valley, 15 km from Sparwood, BC. Elkview is an open-pit coal mine that mines metallurgical (coking) coal. This mine is owned by Teck Cominco and has produced 165 million tonnes of coal since 1969

Fording River
Fording River is an open-pit coal mine that is owned by Teck Coal. It produces mainly metallurgical (coking) coal, and a small amount of thermal coal. Every year, this mine produces between 8 and 10 million tonnes of coal

Greenhills
Greenhills is an open-pit mine that produces mainly metallurgical (coking) coal and a small amount of thermal coal. The plant is owned by Tech Coal and has the capacity to produce 5.5 million tonnes of coal each yea

Line Creek
Line Creek is an open-pit mine that produces metallurgical (coking) coal andthermal coal. The mine is owned by Tech Coal, and today produces 2.3 million tonnes of coal every year.

Peace River Disctrict
Brule (Willow Creek)
Brule (Willow Creek) mine is an open-pit coal mine located about 45 km south-southwest of Chetwynd. The Brule mine is an open pit mine that produces primarily metallurgical (coking) coal. The Brule pit was opened in 2007 and has produced 1.3 million tones of coal annually. Run by Western Canada Coal

Trend Mine
Trend Mine is open pit mine produces over 2 million tonnes of metallurgical coal per year. This mine is operated by Peace River Coal, a Limited Partnership amongst Anglo American plc., NEMI Northern Energy & Mining Inc., and Hillsborough Resources Limited.

Wolverine
The Wolverine (Perry Creek) coal mine is located 23km west of Tumbler Ridge, and is operated by Western Canadian Coal Corporation. Wolverine is an open-pit coal mine that produces metallurgical (coking) coal.
