Movement-builders for biodiversity
The Wilderness Committee works to protect nature, defend wildlife and fight climate change across Canada. Founded in 1980, we harnessed the power of people to create change right from the start. We know that when people understand what’s at stake for nature, they’re inspired to act. We turn that spark into powerful collective action with research, online tools and informed campaigns to rally behind as a unified voice.
We’re proud to be an independent and people-powered nonprofit, fighting for an equitable and environmentally just future for all.
Our beliefs
Our long-term vision is that wilderness and wildlife thrive for the well-being of all. To get there, our organization aims to protect life-giving biodiversity through collaborative grassroots mobilization that transforms systems. We believe that:
- Healthy nature is vital to thriving communities
- People taking informed action create change
- Relationships with community and the land are grounded in our work
- Solutions challenge systems to create equity and justice for all
Indigenous Rights And Title
The Wilderness Committee works on the traditional lands and waters of Indigenous Peoples, in what is now known as Canada. From day one, we’ve partnered with First Nations to ensure we protect the right places, alongside the people who have always cared for them. One of our earliest partnerships with the Haida Nation resulted in the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve.
As we fight to expand protections for land and water in B.C., Manitoba and Ontario, we believe in doing so in a way that respects Indigenous rights and title. We want all governments to implement UNDRIP and integrate its principles with their conservation efforts.
