Grassroots collaborations

Preserving land means supporting the original inhabitants

The lands across what is now known as Canada won’t be protected without the leadership of Indigenous Peoples. Their direction and guidance has been integral to so many wins for the environment. We aim to be a good friend to Nations who need support, whether in terms of getting their land back or working to protect it.

Our friends and allies

We are honoured to support:

  • The NuchatlahtMa’amtagila, Kwakiutl and Mowachaht-Muchalaht Nations on Vancouver Island
  • Grassy Narrows First Nation in Ontario with their fight against the mercury poisoning in their waters from a pulp mill spill.
  • Indigenous groups like Traditional Ecological Knowledge Elders and KiiGaDoWaak Nookimisuk with their defense of the land.
  • Minegoziibe AnishinabeWuskwi Sipihk First Nation and Tootinaowaziibeeng First Nation in their stewardship of their lands and waters in Manitoba.

Species need advocates to be their voice

Increased industrial development and corresponding tanker traffic off the lower mainland is a constant threat to the southern resident killer whale population hanging on by a thread. While environmental allies advocating for this species are many, our friends at the International Longshore Workers Union Canada have joined us in making links between the plight of workers and species — a relationship we hope carries on into the future.

With Northern Ontario residents and members of Serpent River First Nation, we are able to push back against unnecessary gravel mining development that threatens Blanding’s Turtles.

Similarly in Manitoba, the plight of the pileated woodpecker led us to connect with local residents, First Nations members and the Manitoba Metis Federation in their fight to protect the sacred lands of Lemay Forest from logging.

Climate justice impacts every aspect of our lives

Our work towards climate justice acknowledges the fundamentally disproportionate impact of climate change on people facing marginalisation in society based on other systems of violence and forms of oppression, including Indigenous Peoples, migrants, queer and non-binary people, renters and tenants, workers, and many more. We collaborate with diverse groups for a moment or an ongoing period of time in order to work jointly on activities and advocacy for policy change and steps towards a more just society.

We’re honoured to work with:

  • BC Poverty Reduction Coalition
  • Infiltrate the System Youth Climate Network
  • Seniors for Climate Action Now

and many other grassroots issue specific groups.
