Fraser River Boat Tour to Highlight Highways Various Threats

Friday, November 20, 2009

What:     A boat tour of the Fraser River to examine threats of the proposed South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR) freeway.

When:     Friday, November 20, 2009, 12 Noon

Where:     MV Native at 900 Quayside Drive in New Westminster, at the foot of the Inn at Westminster Quay just west of the Westminster Quay Market

Who:
The South Fraser Action Group (a new grassroots group of Delta and Surrey residents), the Wilderness Committee and other activists, as well as invited local leaders and elected officials

Why:
The potential impacts of the South Fraser Perimeter Road are still far from understood by the general public and local leaders. We wanted to give folks a first hand look at what was at stake,” said Wilma Haig, a member of the South Fraser Action Group that organized the event.

The impact of the further industrialization of the banks of this river would be horrible for species in the Fraser River, for Burns Bog and for our invaluable farmland. We were happy to support this event because we want to see this project stopped before it’s too late,” said Ben West Healthy Communities Campaigner for the Wilderness Committee.

Surrey and Delta residents as well as environmentalists and decision-makers will also be available to discuss the impacts on farmland and communities which will happen if the project proceeds.

B- Roll footage of the boat tour will be available upon request
