International Expert Joins Call for a Moratorium on Incinerators in BC

Tuesday, August 18, 2009
Vancouver - World renowned environmental and human health advocate Dr. Paul Connett today joined local activists to call for a moratorium on waste incinerators in BC.

"When communities around the world are targeted by large corporations to facilitate waste incineration they are promised that the facilities are safe and that they produce clean energy" said Connett, an expert in the dangers of waste incineration. "The truth is that these operations are very harmful to human health and do not represent a waste management solution."

The Wilderness Committee has been working with community groups to stop a hazardous waste incinerator proposal in the Kootenays.

"Burning garbage and industrial waste won't make it disappear: it will end up poisoning our bodies, polluting our environments and even contributing to climate change," said Ben West, Healthy Communities Campaigner for the Wilderness Committee. "We all know if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. "

Concerned Local residents with the support of public interest groups invited Connett to speak in Christina Lake where a hazardous waste incinerator has been proposed to deal with toxic waste from oil refineries in California and elsewhere. While in Vancouver, Connett will be meeting to discuss campaign strategy with representatives of Zero Waste Vancouver, the Wilderness Committee and other groups working to stop incinerators from being built in BC. Six incinerators are being proposed in Metro Vancouver in addition to the hazardous waste incinerator proposed for Christina Lake.

From the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, Connett led an international effort that blocked the construction of dozens of waste incinerators across North America. Concerned BC residents are hoping to continue in this effort and block these new proposals.
