Opening Ceremony for Surrey Nature Trail to Highlight Potential Highway Impacts

Saturday, January 30, 2010
What: The Wilderness Committee and Surrey Environmental Partners have partnered with area residents to build the "South Fraser Witness Trail" in Surrey close to Surrey Bend Regional Park. The Opening ceremony will feature a ribbon cutting and brief statements by campaign coordinators about the potential impacts of the South Fraser Perimeter Road on the area. Nestled along the banks of the Fraser River, this lush and magnificent trail will make you forget that you are in the city.

Where: Participants will meet at the trailhead (see google map) on 168 St. (400 meters northwest of the intersection of 168 St. and 108 Ave.), in Fraser Heights

When: Saturday January 30th at 11 AM

Who: On hand will be the area residents who built the trail. Ben West (Wilderness Committee), Kevin Purton (Surrey Environmental Partners) and Eric Doherty ( Livable Region Coalition) will be available to give statements and answer questions.

Why: This area is under threat from the proposed South Fraser Perimeter Road, a part of the Gateway highway expansion project.

"We have decided to use a campaign technique people associate with wilderness areas like Clayoquot Sound and the Elaho Valley right here in the Lower Mainland so people can see for themselves what is at stake," said Ben West from the Wilderness Committee.

"The Gateway project would make BC less sustainable and would be a big step in the wrong direction for stopping climate change. This project comes at a great cost to the tax payers, the local environment and everyone that will have to deal with more big trucks and more pollution in their backyard," said West.
