Our new Conservation and Policy Campaigner Charlotte Dawe!

Thursday, October 26, 2017

Charlotte grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, born into an adventurous family who took every opportunity to teach kindness and respect for animals and nature. From caring for injured frogs, salamanders and turkeys, animals have always been a focus in her life. Because of this, her passion for protecting wilderness and wildlife started from a very young age.

After high school, she packed her bags and bought a solo ticket to Africa. She worked to rehabilitate wildlife and relocate them to safer habitats. It was there that she realized the most effective way to protect wildlife is to protect their habitat. It was also there that she realized it is easier said than done.

Returning from Africa, she studied Conservation Biology at the University of Alberta. She began to understand the complexity behind the issues of land management and wildlife habitat protection. During her summer research, she had the opportunity to explore Alberta and realized how broken the land management system is.

From seismic lines ripping up the boreal forests designated for “Boreal caribou protection,” to industrial footprints leaving permanent scars in our national parks, it became evident that the current system for protecting our wilderness and wildlife is not working.

Feeling desperate to help and to do everything she could to change this broken system, she joined the Wilderness Committee as the new Conservation and Policy Campaigner. In this position, she is looking forward to protecting Canadian wildlife and wilderness by sharing her passion for the wild species and spaces across the country with others and advocating for new effective laws.

On the weekends you can find her hitting the slopes (of course on a snowboard), testing out backcountry gear in the alpine, or cooking up food creations to feed to anyone who is willing.
