Tell Ottawa to protect Wasaga Beach piping plovers

In 2025 the Ontario government removed provincial park protections for critical breeding habitat for endangered piping plovers  in Wasaga Beach. They also scrapped all species-at-risk protections for migratory birds such as the plovers.

Tell the Feds to step in

Write a letter to your local Member of Parliament and Minister of the Environment, Climate Change and Nature Honourable Julie Dabrusin asking for an emergency order to protect piping plover habitat at Wasaga Beach.

How can Ottawa help?

The federal Species at Risk Act requires the federal minister of environment and climate change and nature to request an emergency order to protect the habitat of any species for which she is of the opinion that its survival or recovery is threatened.

  • I am writing to request a federal emergency protection order under the Species at Risk Act (SARA) to stop the destruction of Canada’s most important breeding site for the Great Lakes population of piping plovers at Wasaga Beach. Failure to issue the order will mean imminent threat to the survival and recovery of this endangered species.
  • Ontario recently stripped Provincial Park status from the essential breeding and nesting grounds at Wasaga Beach. This site is responsible for 7 in 10 piping plovers that have survived to adulthood in Ontario since the species returned in 2007.
  • This critical habitat faces imminent destruction. Without federal intervention, planned beach “grooming” by the town of Wasaga Beach will move forward this spring. The removal of park status means active protections by provincial staff, such as perimeter fencing, nest enclosures and monitoring will be lacking as effective safeguards against recreational activities.
  • The piping plover habitat at Wasaga Beach represents one of the most substantial cases for an emergency protection order. I urge you to do everything in your power to make sure this happens.  I look forward to your immediate and thorough reply conveying your commitment.
