Update on our efforts to protect BC's Killer Whales

Friday, June 19, 2009

The fight to protect British Columbia's killer whales continues.  The Wilderness Committee, together with a handful of other Canadian environmental organizations is taking the federal government to court to ensure that Canada's Species at Risk Act is properly applied.

Over the last few years we have won significant court victories to ensure that our children and grandchildren have killer whales in their future.  One of our biggest victories was the recent decision by the federal government to declare that it is illegal to damage or destroy the critical habitat of BC's northern and southern resident killer whales.

While the decision is a giant step forward we need to ensure that the decision applies to the biological attributes of critical habitat such as salmon, noise pollution and toxins.  This is essential because to thrive killer whales need quiet, clean water and plentiful salmon.
