Make Manitoba care for caribou — before it’s too late!

Boreal caribou are in crisis in Manitoba like never before. Despite decades of studies and promises, caribou habitat that the animals need to survive is constantly being disrupted. Both the provincial government and the federal government are ignoring the legal protections that are required to care for these threatened species under the Species at Risk Act.

Caring for caribou is caring for our own life support system, the boreal forest that provides fresh water and clean air and stores carbon. We have to preserve caribou to preserve our healthy lives.

Please tell the Manitoba government that it is past time to protect caribou. We desperately need action now.

Points to consider in your letter:
  • Hire a full-time boreal caribou biologist for the province of Manitoba.
  • Fund GPS collar data study for each caribou range in the province.
  • Conduct aerial surveillance of at least one caribou range each year.
  • Establish a protected area for at least 80 per cent of each caribou range in the province.
  • Designate recovery habitat adjacent to each caribou range in the province.
  • Halt all industrial activity including mineral exploration and logging in caribou ranges until these steps are complete.
