The Manitoba government wanted to know if we should protect more of nature in the province. Pemmican Island was being considered for protection status. This small island on Lake Winnipegosis is a haven for wild birds and should be preserved from development. Preserving nature and wild spaces as we face a biodiversity crisis is critical.

For years Pemmican Island was legally protected, but in 2016, the Progressive Conservative government dropped protection of Pemmican Island in favour of mining! At the time, the government protected five of six islands on Lake Winnipegosis and opened up Pemmican Island for mineral exploration.

Now again in 2023, with an election looming, protection as a provincial park is being considered. This public consultation was open until June 25, 2023.
