Fire Mountain spotted owl habitat logging

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

A recently discovered active logging operation in spotted owl habitat on Fire Mountain, located just north of Harrison Lake, British Columbia Canada has sparked calls from the Wilderness Committee for the resignation of BC Environment Minister Barry Penner.

Not only is BC's Environment Minister failing to step in to protect this endangered species, this logging proves that the existing federal Species at Risk Act (SARA) is not being enforced by the feds - or is too weak to protect Canadian critically endangered species like the spotted owl. This logging on Fire Mountain in such important habitat also points out why BC needs its own stand-alone endangered species law that citizens can enforce in the courts when the province fails to do so.  Fire Mountain is in St at imc territory.
