Public meeting to discuss proposed logging tenures on Gambier Island

VANCOUVER – Wilderness Committee staff and supporters will be attending a public meeting this evening in West Vancouver regarding a proposal to issue new logging tenures on Gambier Island, in the heart of Howe Sound.

The BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO) is considering designating two woodlots on the island, risking prime recreational forest lands for long-term timber extraction at a time when Howe Sound is building a thriving economy based on outdoor recreation and tourism.

“Howe Sound and its islands and forests are of national significance. There are trees on Gambier Island that are centuries old – a natural treasure located right next to Vancouver. We need to see a full-on land-use plan for Howe Sound, not this forest ministry logging plan,” said Joe Foy, National Campaign Director with the Wilderness Committee.

The Ministry of Forests is hosting a public information meeting about the proposal, and concerned citizens are encouraged to attend to ask questions and voice concerns.

“History is always made by those who show up,” said Foy, who is expecting a good turnout.
