BC Climate Justice

The fight for people and the planet

Climate change is one of the most important challenges facing society today. We’ve long fought against new and expanded fossil fuel infrastructure — TMX, fracking and LNG, coal and more — and the governments and industries that have led us here. We’ve consistently advocated for policies and programs that lower emissions and move us toward a carbon-free future.

After more than a decade of doing this work, however, we’ve also recognized a critical part of this fight is the need for climate justice. This means acknowledging that the communities least responsible for climate change are often those most impacted, and addressing this injustice. From the regions where pipelines and highways are built, to those experiencing damage and loss due to extreme weather events like floods and heat domes, the impacts of climate change are not felt equally. A thriving future demands not just less carbon, but more equity, dignity and protection for the people most at risk.

Climate justice is economic justice

Climate change isn’t just about melting ice caps and rising seas. It’s about how people live and who gets left behind. In communities across B.C. and beyond, the climate crisis is colliding with a deepening affordability crisis. Rents remain sky high, utility bills are climbing, food is unaffordable and transportation is out of reach for many.

We can’t solve the climate emergency without solving the cost-of-living emergency. And we can’t do either without putting people and community care at the heart of our solutions.

Starting at home

Without strong rent control and tenant protections in B.C., people are being pushed out of their communities in the name of climate action. Others are struggling in inadequate housing during heat waves and floods. Wilderness Committee supports grassroots housing justice campaigns demanding real protections like rent control and tenant protections to keep homes affordable and secure.

At the same time, energy poverty is worsening. As heating bills climb, fossil fuel companies continue to profit. That’s why we also back movements fighting against fossil fuel expansion and for the right to affordable, renewable energy for all, because no one should have to choose between warmth and putting food on the table.

Fueling people, not profits

Climate change is hitting northern and Indigenous communities in B.C. the hardest — disrupting traditional food systems and access to land. At the same time, corporate food monopolies and car-dependent planning are deepening inequality. We need fare-free urban transit, expanded rural service and strong investment in local food systems. Accessible transit and food sovereignty are climate solutions that build stronger, more just communities.

A global movement

Climate justice doesn’t stop at borders. Around the world, people are being displaced by droughts, floods, heat and conflict made worse by climate change. These crises force millions to migrate, not because they want to, but because they don’t have a choice.

Yet, wealthy countries like Canada, whose fossil fuel industries have fueled the crises, are closing borders and criminalizing migrants. At the Wilderness Committee, we support immigration policies that recognize climate displacement, uphold human rights and ensure safety, dignity and status for all. Climate justice means global solidarity and fighting for a world where no one is left behind.

A just world for all

We’ve hosted more than 10 events over the past year across B.C., connecting climate change to the issues that matter most to communities. We’ve witnessed the power of coming together and envisioning a just future. From keeping fracked gas out of buildings in Vancouver to protecting our transit routes, we’ve worked with our supporters to keep policies that are good for climate action and our wellbeing. We’ll continue to engage with and amplify the voices of our friends and allies, calling for solutions that address all these challenges at their core.

Join the growing community that’s fighting against the artificial separation of our most pressing challenges — climate, affordability, housing, health and more — and towards a future where people and the planet are safe and thriving.

One Crisis

The soaring cost of groceries, sky-high rent, and energy bills that make you think twice before turning on the lights. Many of us are already stretched thin and climate change only makes it worse. The truth is we don’t have to choose between affordability and climate action — we can tackle both. Check out our latest report about how the affordability and climate crises are deeply connected and the same systemic solutions can address both.
