Newly released B.C. climate report reveals more emissions and excuses

The B.C. government has released its long-overdue Climate Change Accountability Report 2024, a document required by law to track provincial progress under the CleanBC climate plan.
The findings are as damning as the delay. According to the report, B.C. will not be able to meet its 2030 target to reduce 40 per cent greenhouse gas emissions. The government’s modeling doesn’t account for two major climate setbacks: the rollback of the carbon tax and the massive impacts of new liquefied natural gas (LNG) megaprojects, both of which will further derail emissions reductions.
The report underscores a concerning trend of largely symbolic climate action and claims of climate leadership, all while deepening dependence on fossil fuels.
“All the EVs and heat pumps the government continues to tout in this report are wiped away by their continued and active expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure,” said Climate Campaigner Isabel Siu-Zmuidzinas.
“Shirking the burden of climate action onto individuals while backing fracking and LNG is a slap in the face to the people of B.C., who are all too familiar with the devastating impacts of climate change-worsened heat waves, wildfires and floods,” said Siu-Zmuidzinas.
“The B.C. government has the power to reverse this trajectory. That means cancelling climate-wrecking LNG fossil fuel projects, massively scaling up public transit, and ensuring buildings and communities are electrified,” said Siu-Zmuidzinas. “While the government continues to throw around excuses for inaction, the path forward is clear and unchanged. What’s missing is political courage and will.”
