Conservation groups worried about Manitoba's growing peat mine industry

About 80 people assembled outside the Manitoba Legislature Thursday  for a World Wetlands Day gathering called  "For Peat’s Sake".

    Representatives from leading conservation groups  talked about the value of wetlands, and expressed concern with the expanding peat mine industry in Manitoba.

 

    Three new peat mining licenses were issued for Manitoba in the last year, and one more for a provincial park is in the public comment phase until February 3.

     Eric Reder, Campaign Director for the Wilderness Committee,  says the level of carbon that will be released if these mines proceed  is astonishing  resulting in a terrible blow to  chances of climate change mitigation...
